Sukeroku is the only store in Japan which has specialized in Edo style miniature toys ever since the late Edo Period. There is a reason why we focus specifically on miniature toys, rather than just any toys. In the time of Yoshimune, the eighth shogun, the large, extravagantly decorated toys favored by wealthy merchants were prohibited by the passage of sumptuary laws. As a result, they turned to toys which were as tiny as possible, displaying intricate craftsmanship, or developed toys which incorporated plays on words, leading to the creation of Edo style miniature toys.
